Top 5 Beginner-Friendly SUP Spots in the UK with Calm Waters

Being a UK based Company, we are always looking for places to use our Bluefin Paddleboards in the UK. From Newquay right up to the top of Scotland, there are so many awesome places you can SUP in the UK. We thought we would start off calm, these spots are perfect SUP beginners or people who just want a chilled out paddle.

1. Ullswater

Ullswater is the second largest lake in the beautiful English Lake District. You have enough room to paddle, the lake is nine miles long and 0.75 miles wide! So, if you are having a whole day Paddleboarding you’ll need to bring a picnic! The lake is long and thin and has been described as a “ribbon lake”, it has also been compared to Lake Lucerne in Switzerland! Flat and calm, this lake is perfect for people who like a relaxed paddle downwind. So, if you want a chill escape to Cumbria’s mini-Switzerland then why not head to Ullswater.

2. The Norfolk Broads, Norfolk

The Norfolk Broads are a SUP haven. Made up of 120 miles of navigable waterways, there are endless trips to take across the seven rivers and 63 broads. Flat and winding, the Norfolk Broads are great for all level of Paddleboarder, especially SUP beginners. Do be aware that to paddle on the Broads you do need a license, this is attainable from The Broads Authority.

3. Cuckmere Haven, East Sussex 

Cuckmere Haven (also known as the Cuckmere Estuary) is an area of floodplains in Sussex, England where the river Cuckmere meets the English Channel. The flat, lazy river is perfect for a chilled-out paddle watching the many birds that nest close to the river. Head down to Cuckmere and enjoy the gorgeous scenery, the Seven Sisters cliffs that are nearby and also at low tide you may see the breath-taking wreck of the wreck of the Polynesia.

4. River Cam, Cambridge 

The River Cam is the main river flowing through Cambridge in eastern England. IT flows for 40 miles from Cambridge to the sea and passes by the beautiful Colleges of Cambridge. Paddle past Magdalene, St John’s and Trinity, as well as King’s, Queen’s and St Catharine’s college before you float under the stunning Mathematical Bridge. The River Cam offers a lazy days paddle past some beautiful sites. Stop off at cafes along the way and samples some of Cambridge’s culinary delights. If you are having a full day out, or a 2-day trip you can follow the Cam down to the Botanical Gardens or visit the Grantchester Orchard riverside tea-rooms, famous for its amazing high tea.

5. Lake Bala

A personal favourite here with the Bluefin SUP Team. Lake Bala is the largest natural lake in Wales at 3.7 miles long and 0.5 miles wide and is famous for its water clarity. Although you have to be wary of flooding, Bala is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed SUP session. So, paddle along the calm waters and explore the North Wales countryside – which has been named 4th in Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Regions in The World!
