Paddleboarding is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and can still be enjoyed even during the winter months. With a little preparation and knowledge, Winter paddleboarding can be a safe and enjoyable experience.
What to wear for Winter paddleboarding
It is important to dress depending on the water temperature… If it’s cold outside, it will be colder in the water which can lead to hypothermia or frostbite if you are not properly prepared for it. Layering your clothes will help to keep you warm and dry when you get out of the water. It is important that your clothes are waterproof and windproof if possible.
Stay safe on the water
You should always be aware of your surroundings when you’re paddleboarding in Winter. Visibility can be low due to ice or foggy conditions. Take precautions before heading out on the water by checking sunrise and sunset times, weather forecasts and conditions before going out on your board. Always wear a PFD.
Here are some of the apps you should consider before heading out on the water:
MultiTide app – a great application for checking the changing tides in your location
The WindAlert, WindGuru or the Windy app are great for checking on the wind direction and strength before heading out.
Met Office – beach forecasts and tide times.
What to take with you
