Here at Bluefin, we’re all about SUP safety. Sure, paddleboarding is one of the most fun activities you can do on the water (we’re not biased at all…), but staying safe has to be your no.1 priority.
Making sure you use a leash is essential. In fact, we’d even say your leash is the most important piece of equipment of all. Not only does it keep you connected to your board should you fall, but it could also mean the difference between life and death in severe situations.
Yep, we’re about to get serious.
Why Leashes Save Lives
If you’re new to SUP and aren’t 100% sure what a leash is, we’ll fill you in. A leash is a cord that connects you to your board. Simply make sure the leash is secure to your board’s tail, wrap the attached strap around your ankle, and you’re good to go.
Now you might be thinking “so what if I’m not connected to my board? If I fall I’ll just swim over and grab it. No big deal.” But this is a lot easier said than done, and is virtually impossible unless you’re in super calm waters. And even then, you should still always wear a leash.
It doesn’t take much for your board to drift away, especially if there’s any sign of a current or waves. And not to mention other paddlers, as your board could easily crash into someone else should it get swept away.
So by not wearing a leash you’re not only putting yourself in danger, but others too.
Choosing the Right Leash
There are two standard types of SUP leash.
The coiled leash is the most commonly used – and for good reason! Ideal for both leisurely paddling and racing, a coiled leash is particularly suitable for flat waters. This style also stays on top of your board, so you won’t have to deal with any drag.
All of our SUP packages come with a coiled leash, so you can get paddling right away.
An alternative to the coil is a straight style. Most suitable for super adventurous paddlers (think surfing and rivers), this leash handles harsh turbulence like a pro. And should you fall off your board, it’ll keep you connected without becoming entangled with other objects.
So if you thought leashes were overhyped, think again. They literally save lives, and form an essential part of any paddling experience.
Plus they help you have more fun! Wearing a leash provides a greater sense of safety when out on the water, which can help you feel a lot more confident. You’ll be more likely to let yourself go and truly enjoy yourself, without having to worry about losing your board or coming detached.
The takeaway is simple. Whether the water is calm or choppy, always wear a leash for maximum safety. And talking of safety, click here to learn all about the warranty you’ll receive when you buy one of our SUPs.
