Autumn is one of the best seasons for paddleboarding. The crowds have thinned out in some of the most breathtaking sup spots, the water is often calmer and the scenery with all the leaves changing is stunning, especially when they are reflecting off the water. However with all these amazing benefits to SUPing in the Autumn you also have to make sure that you are dressing appropriately.

Wetsuit or Drysuit?

If you think that you are likely to fall in or if you would just like that peace of mind, dressing in a wetsuit is your best bet. A 3-5mm wetsuit will provide you with a good layer of insulation if you end up taking a little dip into the water. For paddlers that want maximum protection or go out on longer tours a drysuit with thermal layers underneath will be perfect and will keep you dry!

On a milder day some paddleboarders opt for more quick drying layers and a waterproof jacket as opposed to a wetsuit/drysuit. However, that being said it’s important to remember you should always dress for the water temperature and not just the air!

Warm Hands and Feet

Cold feet can end even the most picturesque SUP session quite quickly and so wearing neoprene boots or watershoes can help to lock in that warmth whilst also providing you with that extra grip on board during these colder months. If it’s really chilly where you are you can consider wearing neoprene socks underneath too!

For your hands you can wear neoprene gloves or pogies are another great option if you would like the freedom and ability to take your hands out quickly and put them back on. Pogies are essentially mitts that slip over your paddle handle providing you with grip and warmth but keeping your hand free.

Don’t forget your head! Heat escapes quite quickly from your head too so a beanie or fleece lined hat is worth taking along on your adventures and a neck warmer too for those when those windier days come along.

A Buoyancy Aid

A PFD is not only a safety essential when out on a SUP but it also adds a good layer of insulation to you when you’re out in the elements. It’s a smart decision for autumn paddling especially if you are going out further from the shore.

Added Extras

Packing a dry bag with spare clothes, a towel and a thermos of something warm this could be anything from soup to a hot chocolate, is such a great way to warm up after being out on an Autumn SUP session.

Sun protection still matters, although you might not feek the heat of the sun like in our summer sup sessions the low sun and reflections from the water can still catch you out and so always make sure to put that suncream on.

Autumn paddleboarding can be magical if you’re dressed for it. Think in layers, protect yourself from wind and water, and always be prepared for a dip. With the right kit, you’ll stay warm, comfortable, and ready to enjoy those crisp mornings and colourful sunsets on the water. And with Black Friday on its way, the only thing cooler than autumn paddling will be the savings.
