Nothing quite beats paddleboarding with your SUP Pup. The calm water and cold autumn air, colourful leaves that line the shore all make for some pretty unforgettable adventures. But as the temperature drops it’s important to take a few extra steps in order to keep your SUP Pup warm, safe and happy to be on board.

Why are they different?

Autumn brings shorter days, colder water temperatures and cooler winds. While your dog may enjoy being outside no matter the season and weather they can feel the chill just like us. Planning ahead means that you both get to enjoy everything the Autumn sup season has to offer without cutting your paddleboard adventures short!

Gear to keep your pup comfortable

Dog Life Jacket: A well-fitted dog life jacket not only gives us peace of mind but will also add an extra layer of warmth to your pup. In addition to this you can look for one with a handle on top to make getting them back on your board that little bit easier.

Warm Layers: Short-haired or smaller breeds may benefit from a waterproof coat, it will help to keep body head in and the breeze out whilst you’re on the water or getting set up.

A Blanket or Non-Slip Mat: Adding this extra layer wether that be a grip pad, towel or a fleece blanket to your board will give your dog a warmer, drier spot to sit on and will help them feel more secure.

Tips for a Happy Paddle

Keep it Short: Autumn sessions don’t need to be that long and if you do want to head out for longer, taking regular breaks on the shoreline will help your pup to stretch, warm up playing fetch and keep them engaged and less likely to go for a cold water dip!

Pack a dry bag for them: Having some gear for them too will help them to have just as much fun, bringing a spare towel to dry them off quickly, some of their favourite treats and a collapsible water bowl are all essentials to consider.

Watching for signs of them getting cold: Be on the lookout for if they start to shiver, whine or they start getting restless. This is a good indicator for heading back to dry ground before they start to get uncomfortable.
