As the paddleboarding season starts to slow down, now is the perfect time to check over all your kit. Whether you have been out every weekend on your SUP maintenance or if you just headed out on a few sunny afternoons, a quick end-of-season check will help to keep your kit fresh and performing the same season after season.

Reflect on Your Season

1. CLEAN YOUR BOARD THOROUGHLY
Everything that your board comes into contact with, salt, sand and algae can slowly wear away at your board's surface over time if it is left like this over the winter period so it’s important to rinse down your board with fresh water and a sponge to remove any dirt or marks. For stubborn spots of grime, use a gentle soap or specialist SUP cleaner to help. Make sure everything is completely dry before packing it away, as moisture can lead to mold or damage the PVC. Proper SUP maintenance includes cleaning and drying your board thoroughly.
2. CHECK FOR DAMAGE OR LEAKS
Inflate your board and check it over for any small punctures, seam wear or signs of bubbling, listen closely for any escaping air. If you do spot anything unusual then you can note it down and get it repaired before the next season. Catching small issues earlier is much easier and cheaper than letting potential problems worsen over time. Regular SUP maintenance ensures your board stays in great shape for the following year.
3. INSPECT YOUR PADDLE AND ACCESSORIES
Just like with your SUP you want to check over all the accessories that you use alongside your paddleboard too like your paddle, leash etc. You want to inspect your paddle for any chips, cracks or any issues when assembling your paddle fully. Ensure that you also rinse your paddle and dry thoroughly to prevent any corrosion on the metal parts. Similar to your paddle do the same with your leash, fins and pump. Clean everything and make sure everything is working well and as it should, repair and fix anything that is broken. Check your life jacket, dry bag, waterproof phone case, and other safety gear for wear and tear. Replace anything that’s past its best. A good rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t trust it in an emergency, it’s time for an upgrade. SUP maintenance involves caring for all your accessories.
4. STORE IT RIGHT
After everything is fully dried out, you want to roll your SUP loosely (not too tight) and store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight or extreme cold. Avoid storing it in a damp garage or shed. If you have space, laying it flat or partially inflated can also help preserve its shape. Proper SUP maintenance also includes the correct storage of your board to ensure it lasts for many seasons.
5. REFLECT ON YOUR SEASON
This is also a great time to think about what worked well and what didn’t. Was your board size right for your paddling style? Did you wish for a faster model, or something lighter to carry? With Black Friday SUP deals on the horizon, making notes now will help when it’s time to refresh your gear next year, especially if you're eyeing that perfect paddleboard upgrade or a special offer on SUPs.
A little care now means a stress-free start next season. Give your SUP the attention it deserves, store it properly, and it’ll be ready to hit the water as soon as the sun returns.
