Just because summer is over doesn't mean that you have to pack away your paddleboard for the year. In fact some people think that Autumn is the best time to head out onto the water, think still mornings, fewer crowds, stunning autumn scenery! So, if you’ve never tried paddleboarding after summer ends, here are five reasons why it’s worth keeping your board inflated a little longer.

1. Peaceful Waters and Empty Shores

When summer comes to an end, so do crowded beauty spots! You will see your favourite SUP spots transform, gliding across still waters with nothing but the sounds of nature surrounding you alongside your paddle splashing in the water. All in all paddleboarding after summer is finished is quieter, slower and more relaxing so whether you get yourself on an early morning paddle in the lake or a calm coastal session, there is another level of peace that comes with off-season paddling.

2. Breathtaking Autumn Scenery

Whilst I know with summer it brings lovely weather and longer paddle days, I feel like Autumn just brings an entirely new palette to our paddle sessions. There is a sea of colour in the Autumn foliage, soft sunlight glistening across the top of the water and a crisp feeling to the air that envelops you. On top of all of this, misty mornings are my favourite time to head out. They feel so cinematic and out of another world! It’s a reminder that paddleboarding isn’t just about fitness but also about soaking up nature

3. A Stronger, Smarter Workout

Paddleboarding during the colder months gives your body a bigger challenge, your muscles will be working harder to stay warm and unlike in the summer months with a warm sun beating down on you you’ll be less inclined to end up in the water meaning that your core and stabilising muscles will be working harder too! Staying steady whilst paddleboarding will increase and build your endurance and co-ordination.

4. Sharpen Your Skills and Build Confidence

As there are less crowds during these times it is the perfect opportunity to refine your technique and practice new paddling styles. You won’t feel rushed, there's not as many external factors during these times like swimmers, boats and other people out on the water and so you can practice at your own pace. Try out step back turns, improve your stance and paddle technique, get yourself comfortable in more varied conditions and you will become a more adaptable paddler!

5. A Boost for Mind and Mood

When summer ends and the days start to get darker quicker it is important for us to make time for ourselves out in nature so that we can have a break from screens which often replace any evening activities like paddle boarding that we did during the summer months. Heading out, even if it’s just for a short paddle, can give you time to decompress from the day, take a break from your screens and have a moment to yourself. Research even shows that cold-weather outdoor exercise can improve mood and boost energy levels. A short paddle on a crisp day can leave you feeling calm, clear-minded, and refreshed, the perfect antidote to dark mornings and busy weeks.

Keep the Adventure Going All Year Round

Paddleboarding after summer doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, it’s all about preparation. A good wetsuit or drysuit, neoprene boots, and gloves will keep you warm, while layers and windproof outerwear help you adapt to changing conditions. Always check the weather, paddle with a friend when possible, and carry a dry bag with spare clothes just in case. Check out our blog of what to wear when paddleboarding here for more information!

With the right mindset and gear, you’ll discover that paddleboarding through autumn and winter can be even more rewarding than in the height of summer. The water’s quieter, the scenery is richer, and the sense of adventure is greater than ever.
