As we move further and further into Autumn the weather is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter and the water conditions are changing too. We want you to enjoy Autumn paddling as much as possible, but with that comes some extra safety precautions. Here are our top tips to help you paddle safely this season.
Clothing & Gear
One of the most important aspects of Out of Season SUPing is wearing the right clothing and having the right gear with you. A good wetsuit or neoprene separates are key to keeping you on the water for as longer. If you were to accidentally end up in the water a wetsuit slows heat loss by trapping a thin layer of water next to your skin, which your body warms up. This keeps you insulated against cold shock and hypothermia.
We recommend a 4/3mm wetsuit thickness for 12°C–15°C water temperatures or a 5/4mm for 8°C–11°C. You can also have additional extras like a hood, boots and gloves which help protect you further against the elements.
Always carry a drybag with spare warm clothes, a towl and a thermos flask filled with a hot drink or soup. They'll hep you warm up and refuel after your paddle and make those colder sessions that bit more rewarding.
In addition to all of the above you want to make sure that you are bringing a light and reflective gear when paddleboarding during these months. Autumn sunsets are beautiful, but darkness follows quickly. A light helps you get back to shore safely, and reflective gear makes sure other water users can see you too! Our paddleboards feature reflective D-rings for added peace of mind.
Water and weather awareness
Checking the weather forecast before you head out. Pay attention to wind speed and direction. Paddling into a headwind is hard work and can be unsafe. Look out for rain, storms, or fog risks too.
Autumn storms can also change rivers and coasts, so check the strength of the current and local conditions. If you don’t have the right gear for the weather, or conditions look challenging, it’s often best to reschedule your trip.
Planning & Timing
We know that getting out on adventures after work is the perfect way to decompress and switch off, with the evenings getting darker quicker we would recommend heading out as soon as possible to avoid getting caught out by fading light. Stick closer to the shoreline and to familiar routes to make it easier to get back safely.
One of the most important tips: tell someone your plan. Let them know where you'll be paddling and when you expect to be back.
Autumn paddling can be magical, quiet waters, stunning scenery, and crisp air but it does take a little extra preparation. With the right kit, planning, and awareness, you can enjoy safe and memorable SUP sessions all season long.
