Llangollen Canal and Chirk Aqueduct- 9 Mile Paddle

Llangollen Canal and Chirk Aqueduct

This paddle is a really chilled out beautiful journey with reflections of trees, blue cloudy skies, and amazing bridges in the calm Llangollen waters.

On your way to enjoy the beautiful river gardens that has plenty of unique statues make sure to take a few pound coins for the donation bucket in the river gardens, you can’t miss it! Next is the most scenic monument where you can paddle over the Chirk Aqueduct and Viaduct surrounded by deep and hypnotizing bright green valley. From here you can see this massive arch bridge next you, which is the Poncysyllte Aqueduct, the biggest one in the world!

This is followed by a long, super dark, and spooky tunnel which I like to attach some colourful LED strips to my paddleboard for as it makes for a more fun and colourful trip. But please do not forget to bring a bright headtorch to see ahead of you. It’s important to note that its one-way traffic through this tunnel and so make sure to have a look down the tunnel first for any oncoming traffic.

The final stop on this route is the biggest Aqueduct in the world the Poncysyllte Aqueduct. Please note that you are not allowed to paddle over it as it does not have safety railings, but you can walk over it and enjoy the beautiful valley with the River Dee underneath, during the summer season the boat and canoe traffic is high. Theres a pub along the way of this route so you can take a breath, have a cool drink whilst admiring all the wildlife like squirrels, geese and other birds and fish you can spot! The launching point from the Chirk Bank Canalside Car Park fills up quite quickly and so only early birds will get a free parking spot!
