Our ambassador Laurie has shared what Pride means to her and why paddleboarding is an inclusive sport for everyone!
This month we celebrate the union of pride and paddleboarding, showcasing the spirit of inclusivity and adventure that defines both the sport and the LGBTQ+ community.
LAURIE'S THOUGHTS ON PRIDE AND PADDLE BOARDING
"June is a special month for the LGBTQI+ community, as it marks the celebration of Pride. As a proud queer woman who came out at 18 (so 22 years ago), I am absolutely thrilled to be part of this amazing celebration that honours and recognises all identities and expressions. We also need to remember though that Pride is not just about being proud of our identity, it’s also about standing in solidarity with all those who have been oppressed and marginalized, Pride started out as a protest.
Pride is not just about one month; it’s a life thing. We should always celebrate our pride and show support for the LGBTQI+ community and recognise the importance of allies in the LGBTQI+ family. Allies provide us with support, understanding, and acceptance when we need it most, and I have always been lucky to have the best family and friends who have always accepted me. I know other peoples stories are not as lucky as mine.
During Pride month we can celebrate by being vocal about our support for LGBTQI+ rights, learning and educating ourselves, participating in pride parades, and encouraging others to join us in celebrating our identities."
Show your support
"I am so fortunate that my friend Jayne from @Liverpoolsupco arranges a Paddle with Pride event for Liverpool paddleboarders to paddle out together like a mini pride parade at the Royal Albert Dock. It is great to find a group that is so inclusive, supportive and have so many great people around me that are also part of the paddle community. So always remember to paddle with pride and just be you!"
