During the summer, I spend several weeks on the road with my self-built camper. And of course, my brand-new Bluefin SUP!
The Adventure Begins
One morning on a beautiful sandy beach in Greece, I finally decided to use my SUP for the first time. The sky was bright blue, and there was no wind at all. Full of anticipation, my mind was set.
I unpacked my SUP, and quickly connected my electric pump. Whilst the pump was working its magic, I packed some provisions while I waited. In no time at all, my SUP was fully inflated ready for me to attach the leash, pick-up my paddle, and set off! I highly recommend the electric pump, as it’s much faster and more relaxed than inflating a board by hand.
As soon as I got onto the water, the sea felt super smooth and calm. Feeling relaxed as ever, I paddled along the coast relatively close to the shore. Enjoying every moment, my destination was a neighbouring bay I had in mind. I arrived after about half an hour of gorgeous paddling.
I was all alone, but I thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet. However, I couldn’t help but notice the sea had a more restless nature than before, with plenty of waves now starting to appear. This was a clear sign for me to leave pretty soon.
I didn’t experience much wind on the beach, and stayed perhaps a little longer than I should have done. I enjoyed a few snacks and, once I’d fixed my waterproof bag back onto the front of my SUP, I began my journey back.
A Sudden Change
After just a few metres on the water, I noticed a light headwind. Once I paddled out of the bay, it suddenly got very strong. Forcing me to paddle against it with all my strength, it almost felt as if I wasn’t moving at all.
With as much strength as I could find, I somehow managed to get around the headland and back towards the shore. After what seemed like an eternity, I paddled ashore and decided to walk the rest of the way back – pulling my SUP behind me.
Another eternity later, I safely reached my camper.
From this experience, I definitely learned the importance of checking in advance for potential weather changes. And in case of any doubt, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
But throughout this unexpected adventure, my Bluefin SUP definitely saved the day! I can’t recommend the Cruise 12’ enough, and I couldn’t be happier.
